The Future Ocean Alliance in partnership with the Republic of Cape Verde are very pleased to invite you to attend the UNFCCC-MPGCA Roundtable Under Pressure: Adapting to Climate Change in Ocean and Coastal Zones under 1.5ºC of Global Warming, which will take place on Wednesday, December 5th, at 17:40-19:10, in the Brazil Pavilion, during Brazil’s Adaptation Day. This event is part of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference 2018 (COP24 of the UNFCCC), in Katowice, Poland, and it is organized by the Future Ocean Alliance (FOA), as focal point of the UNFCCC Marrakech Partnership for Global Climate Action (MPGCA) for the Oceans Thematic Group. This event will include 60 minutes of presentations followed by 30 minutes of debate to which you are warmly invited to contribute.
Recalling that the ocean and coastal zones play a crucial role to achieving the sustainable development goals (SDGs) towards the UN 2030 Agenda, the UNFCCC objectives, including the Paris Agreement global goal for enhancing adaptive capacity, strengthening resilience and reducing vulnerability to climate change, this event addresses a central issue to shape the future of coastal States, particularly to SIDS and LDCs: adapting to climate change impacts under 1.5Cº of global warming.
The objective of this event is to exchanging experiences, identifying success, needs and challenges and recommendations to enhancing resilience and adaptation of impacts in ocean and coastal areas, as well as to raising awareness among UNFCCC Parties and Non-parties, across all sectors and scales of governance, towards a coordinated and coherent programme of action on adaptation in ocean and coastal zones and the communities’ therein. Information about the Global Climate Action events will be available at https://unfccc.int/climate-action/marrakech-partnership/events/gca-at-cop24.
Highlights of this panel: The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), will provide the highlight of the IPCC Special report on the impacts of global warming of 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels. This report represents the outlook of the changing reality that public and private managers must adapt to- its sets the stage. The European Bank of Investment and H.E. Gilberto Silva, Minister for Agriculture and the Environment of Cape Verde will contribute to the discussions on needs for policy adaptation, including development, cooperation and good neighbourhood financefor adaptation in ocean and coastal zones under impacts of 1.5ºC of global warming- which is also a key issue to the future of blue economy. A second set of panellists will share concrete examples of adaptation from countries of different geographies and levels of development.
The results of this event will be shared with participants and will be delivered to the Presidency of the COP, which will contribute to the UNFCCC Process in 2019, in particular to support the development a coherent and coordinated programme of action to address the impacts of GHG emissions in ocean and costal zones, with emphasis on adaptation to impacts in ocean and coastal zones. These results will also be communicated on December 8th, in the concluding panel of the networked events co-organized by the ocean community at the COP24 of the UNFCCC (Japan Pavilion).
